Refrigeration – Super Efficient Evaporators

PETD represents a new, disruptive technology in refrigeration. PETD evaporators perform the defrosting process 10 times faster with 90% less energy than current technology. The current defrost methods consume 12-25% of the total energy today’s refrigerators. Additional system-wide efficiencies produce overall energy savings of 25-33%.

Preliminary analysis by a large grocer indicates that the constant temperature provided by PETD technology yields an even greater economic benefit than the value of the energy savings.

A replacement PETD evaporator in a single standard 72cuft convenience/grocery display case refrigerator uses 25% less energy ($525.00/year @12 cents/kWhr). Since the cost of a new smaller PETD evaporator is less than the recycled value of the old one, minimal labor is the only cost of replacement.

PETD Evaporators up to 35% more efficient in refrigeration

Current refrigeration technology has not changed materially since 1930. The constant heating and cooling in conventional defrosting is not only energy inefficient, but also causes unnecessary appliance wear and tear. Furthermore, the temperature fluctuation caused by this cooling heating cycle also reduces food shelf life. For the average full grocery store, the value of increased food shelf life is greater then the energy savings.

Windshields

A PETD-enabled car windshield can be fully deiced in under 10 seconds, from a cold start in sub-zero temperatures. Article

Dartmouth Engineering Professor Victor Petrenko and his research team discovered that applying short pulses of electricity directly to an ice-material interface produces some novel and desirable effects. This discovery led them to invent an ultra-fast and efficient method of ice removal and prevention called pulse electro-thermal deicing (PETD).

Wind Power – Wind Blade Anti-Icing & Deicing

Summary: In November of 2010, PETD wind blade deicing was one of five winners of the GE Ecomagination Award (as IceCode*) . video

PETD technology has been successfully deployed for in-flight deicing in commercial aviation. Simple design changes and testing are required for use on wind turbines.

Competition: None. No good deicing solution has been identified in the wind power market.

Cold climate solutions especially anti-icing and deicing solutions for heavy icing conditions and acceptable ice detection not yet commercially available in the market – - See page 15, IEA Wind, Brussels May 2011

IP Status: Patented worldwide.

Market: 5-10% of installations in US, Canada and China are cold climate.
